About Myanmar Now

Independent Established source

Myanmar Now was established in 2015 by the Thomson Reuters Foundation to support independent journalism. It was initially supported financially by the Thomson Reuters Foundation and now relies on reader donations and grants from international donors.

Myanmar Now is an independent news service dedicated to investigative reporting on corruption, human rights violations, and abuses by powerful entities in Myanmar. Following the 2021 military coup, the junta revoked Myanmar Now's operating license, raided its headquarters, and forced its journalists into hiding and exile, with core operations relocating to Melbourne, Australia. The military junta and its affiliated media have accused Myanmar Now of bias and selective reporting, labeling its coverage as 'fake news' and anti-government propaganda. Despite severe repression, including the imprisonment of its photojournalist Sai Zaw Thaike for 20 years, Myanmar Now has received numerous awards for its courageous and impactful journalism, including the Free Media Pioneer Award from the International Press Institute-International Media Support. Its reporting is cited by leading global news organizations, governments, and human rights groups.

Reading context

Media systems vary by law, ownership, and editorial custom. We preserve each outlet's framing and add context so readers can compare coverage without treating one country as the default.
