About Gazeta Wyborcza

Paper Of Record Center-leftEstablished source

Gazeta Wyborcza was founded on May 8, 1989, as a press organ of the Solidarity Civic Committee, emerging from the Polish Round Table Agreement. It is published by Agora SA, a Polish media company. Adam Michnik has served as its editor-in-chief since its inception. While initially owned by Agora SA, the American company Cox Communications also held a partial stake at one point.

Media Bias/Fact Check rates Gazeta Wyborcza as Left-Center biased due to its editorial positions and story selection, but also assigns it a 'High' rating for factual reporting. The newspaper is recognized as a leading liberal voice on issues such as the separation of church and state, women's rights, and LGBT rights, which has led to conflicts with Poland's former conservative government. Gazeta Wyborcza has faced significant pressure, including abusive lawsuits (SLAPPs) from public officials and state-controlled companies, and has been targeted by the government with advertising cuts. Despite these pressures, it is considered a flagship for independent quality journalism in Poland's polarized media landscape.
