10 crew members missing after freighter sinks off Silivri as search passes 24 hours

Search teams have been looking for 10 crew members for more than 24 hours after the dry cargo ship Tuğberk İmamoğlu sank off Silivri.

The accident occurred 18 miles south of Silivri when the 90-meter Turkish-flagged tanker Alsu, traveling from Kocaeli to Aliağa, collided with the freighter, which was sailing from İskenderun Port to Karadeniz Ereğli.

The Tuğberk İmamoğlu sank after the collision, and authorities lost contact with its 10 crew members. Teams are searching from the air, the surface and underwater.

The operation is being coordinated from a crisis center established by the Provincial Directorate of Disaster and Emergency Management in Silivri. The coast guard, coastal safety authorities, Turkish naval forces, AFAD, Silivri Municipality and the Turkish Red Crescent are taking part. The effort includes 18 vessels, five helicopters, two unmanned aerial vehicles, one aircraft and a naval underwater search ship. Relatives of the missing crew members continue to wait in the area.
