100 Years of Erdélyi Helikon: Descendants Speak of a Living Legacy

The Marosvécs castle hosted a series of events commemorating the 100th anniversary of Erdélyi Helikon, a pivotal Hungarian literary and cultural movement in Transylvania. Exhibitions showcased the work of "Helikon women" curated by Éva Medgyessy, the history of Erdélyi Helikon and its publication Hitel, curated by István Tas Szász, and a collection dedicated to the memory of Lajos Olosz, prepared by Botond Benedek-Huszár and Klára Benedek.

Further events included the re-release of János Kemény's "Praise of the Snow-Capped Mountains," edited by Gyula H. Szabó, and an analysis of Miklós Bánffy's book graphics by architect Gyula Dávid. Literary historians discussed the contributions of Helikon authors, with a particularly memorable presentation by the 98-year-old Dávid Gyula, a prominent figure in contemporary Hungarian culture in Transylvania. An interesting collection of works by György Szántó was also presented.

A deeply moving moment of the celebration was a roundtable discussion featuring the descendants of Erdélyi Helikon's creators. Offspring of figures such as Miklós Bánffy, János Kemény, László Tompa, Albert Maksay, Sándor Kacsó, János Bartalis, and Jenő Szentimrei shared their personal recollections and family histories. They spoke about the legacy they preserve, which embodies the profoundly Hungarian-loving, deeply humanistic, and exceptionally demanding spirit of Erdélyi Helikon.

This unique conversation not only brought to life the human stories behind the literary history but also served as a centennial reckoning. The creators and their families collectively affirmed that the legacy of the 100-year-old Erdélyi Helikon remains vibrant today, representing a highly valued and immense communal asset. The events underscored the enduring significance of this cultural heritage.
