12 terrorists killed in foiled attack on Borno military base — Army

Nigerian Army forces successfully thwarted an attempted terror attack on a military position in Kirawa, Borno State, on Friday, eliminating at least 12 insurgents. The joint task force, operating under Operation Hadin Kai, engaged suspected members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) or Boko Haram.

The assault occurred in the early hours along the Nigeria-Cameroon border. According to Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, spokesperson for the joint task force, troops from the 153 Task Force Battalion, supported by the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), detected the infiltration attempt. They responded with "overwhelming firepower," forcing the attackers to retreat towards Cameroon with significant casualties.

The terrorists were forced to abort their mission and withdraw in confusion towards the Cameroon axis, sustaining heavy casualties during the engagement.

Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance assets, along with air components, provided coordinated support during the operation. The military reported recovering various weapons, including AK-47 rifles, rocket-propelled grenade systems, ammunition, and a PKT machine gun. Blood trails were observed along the insurgents' withdrawal routes, indicating that several fleeing fighters were likely wounded.

The army stated that troops have increased vigilance in the area and are conducting operations to track down remaining fighters and recover more weapons. This foiled attack marks the third such attempt repelled by the military within the week, highlighting ongoing efforts to combat insurgency in the region.
