13 suspected kidnappers, others face trial in Osun

The Osun State Police Command is set to prosecute 13 individuals arrested for a range of serious offenses, including kidnapping, cultism, and ritual-related activities. Police Commissioner Ibrahim Gotan announced that the suspects were apprehended during separate operations across the state, which also led to the rescue of a kidnapped herder and the recovery of N2.2 million in ransom.

The team successfully rescued the victim unhurt. The kidnappers, on sighting the operatives, opened fire, and the police equally responded professionally, leading to a gun duel during which some of the suspected kidnappers sustained gunshot injuries and one was arrested, while others fled.

Among those facing charges are two suspected kidnappers. Police operatives successfully rescued a 50-year-old Fulani herdsman, Haruna Yusuf, who had been abducted on July 9 near Wasinmi Village. The rescue occurred on July 12 after the Violent Crime Response Unit monitored the ransom payment process and ambushed the collection point. A gun duel ensued, during which one suspect was arrested and others fled, while the victim was unharmed.

In addition to the kidnapping arrests, three individuals are being investigated for alleged ritual-related activities as suspected cultists. Police recovered a small coffin and locally made charms from these suspects. Furthermore, eight other individuals were arrested during raids on identified black spots within the state for various offenses, including the unlawful possession of substances suspected to be Indian hemp.

The sum of N2,217,800 was recovered at the scene as proceeds of ransom. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining members of the kidnapping gang.

Commissioner Gotan also disclosed the arrest of another suspected kidnapper, Buhari Mutari, in Oyo State, following a foiled kidnap attempt in May. The command is conducting thorough investigations to identify all members of the criminal networks involved and ensure all perpetrators are brought to justice.
