13 tourists killed in Peru's Nazca Lines plane crash

Tragedy struck near Peru's famed Nazca Lines on August 1, when a small tourist plane crashed shortly after takeoff, claiming the lives of all 13 individuals on board. The aircraft, a Cessna 208 Caravan operated by AeroDiana, was carrying foreign tourists eager to witness the enigmatic geoglyphs etched into the desert sands.

The victims comprised seven Italian nationals, two Germans, and two Spaniards, in addition to the two crew members. Their ages ranged from 24 to 78. The plane departed from the airport in Pisco, a coastal city approximately 240 kilometers south of the capital, Lima, and crashed in the Vista Alegre district.

Police Major Jorge Andrade confirmed the grim reality at the crash site, stating, "Given the severity of the accident, there are no survivors." Emergency responders worked overnight to recover the charred remains of the passengers and crew from the twisted wreckage.

Peru's civil aviation authority and air accident investigation agency have launched a probe into the incident. While the exact cause remains under investigation, preliminary information from municipal officials in Vista Alegre suggests an "in-flight emergency" may have been the cause. AeroDiana, the operating airline, has stated it will release further information soon.

This incident has prompted discussions about aviation safety around the popular tourist attraction. Peruvian President Keiko Fujimori indicated that the government is considering the possible closure of the Pisco airport. Accidents have occurred previously in the vicinity of the Nazca Lines, with seven people killed in a similar plane crash in 2022.
