134 Swedes evacuated on Greek island

A total of 134 Swedish tourists have been evacuated from the Greek island of Lesbos as a result of raging wildfires. The travelers, who were staying in Plomari, were moved to a beach on another part of the island by tour operator Apollo. They are currently awaiting further information regarding the firefighting efforts and their potential return. Martina Krantz, Apollo's press spokesperson, described the situation as "special" but noted that the evacuation proceeded calmly according to staff on site. Apollo is monitoring the situation closely and will arrange alternative accommodation if guests cannot return to their original lodgings. The company also has eight guests on the island of Crete, where wildfires have claimed the lives of two firefighters in the Rethymno area. However, Apollo stated that no evacuations are currently necessary there, as the fire is moving away from their hotels and guests. Meanwhile, 90 Norwegian tourists have also been evacuated from Lesbos, according to Norwegian broadcaster NRK. Wildfires have been a significant problem across Greece this summer, exacerbated by heatwaves.
