15 communes in Vĩnh Long to become urban districts, Trung Thành renamed Vũng Liêm

The Vĩnh Long Provincial People's Council in Vietnam has approved a resolution to establish new urban districts, known as phường, across the province. This decision will see 15 existing communes, or xã, transition into phường status while retaining their current names, areas, and populations.

The communes designated for this change include Trà Ôn, Long Hồ, Tân Quới, Tam Bình, Mỏ Cày, Bình Đại, Phú Túc, Tiên Thủy, Tân Thủy, Càng Long, Ba Tri, Tiểu Cần, Hùng Hòa, Tân Hòa, and Tập Ngãi. These areas have met all five criteria for urban district status, including population size, natural area, functional role in planning, urbanization level, and socio-economic development.

In a separate but related change, the commune of Trung Thành will be renamed Vũng Liêm phường upon its establishment as an urban district. Following the creation of these 16 new phường, Vĩnh Long province will comprise 35 phường and 89 xã, maintaining the total number of cấp xã (commune-level administrative units).

Local residents have largely supported the proposed changes, with feedback indicating consensus rates between 91% and 100%. The administrative restructuring follows a period of consolidation, with Vĩnh Long province having previously merged with Trà Vinh, Bến Tre, and other areas. The provincial administrative center is located in Long Châu phường (formerly in Vĩnh Long City).
