16 dead in two major traffic accidents in Ecuador over the weekend

Ecuador's roads witnessed a tragic weekend, with two major traffic accidents claiming the lives of 16 people and leaving three others injured. The incidents occurred in the provinces of Bolívar and Santa Elena, highlighting critical road safety issues in the country.

In the Andean province of Bolívar, a pickup truck lost control and fell into an abyss on Monday morning. The accident, which took place at kilometer 23 on the route connecting Guanujo and Echeandía, resulted in four deaths and two injuries. Emergency response units arrived at the scene to provide care to the survivors, who were transported to nearby health centers.

The previous day, in the coastal province of Santa Elena, a severe collision occurred between a truck and a van. The impact was so forceful that the truck overturned and caught fire. This accident, which happened early Sunday morning near the entrance to the Zapotal commune, claimed at least twelve lives and left one person injured.

These incidents underscore a grim period for road safety in Ecuador, with the total fatalities from these two events reaching 16 within a 48-hour span. Authorities are investigating the exact circumstances that led to both accidents.
