16 neglected children found in remote US house; four arrested

Authorities in Ohio, United States, have arrested four individuals after discovering 16 children living in shocking conditions of neglect in a remote house. The children, ranging in age from 1.5 to 18 years old, were found in a severely deteriorated state, with multiple requiring urgent medical attention.

State prosecutor Andy Wilson described the conditions as unimaginable, stating, "Conditions that one cannot even imagine people, let alone children, being in." The four arrested individuals are believed to be the children's parents and grandparents. Police have not confirmed if all the children are related but have stated that human trafficking is not suspected.

Thomas Stolly, the mother's attorney, reported that his client became a mother at 15 and had been a full-time homemaker. He described her as sad and exhausted when he met her, expressing concern for her children's well-being and when she would see them again.

Several of the children needed hospital care, with two in such critical condition they had to be airlifted for treatment. Prosecutor Wilson called the situation the worst he had ever witnessed. Neighbors in the small community of fewer than 1,000 residents said they had never seen the children before.

The children were not enrolled in school, and the family had moved frequently over the past 20 years. Wilson indicated the family was adept at keeping the children hidden, with most of their time spent in a small, approximately 3x3 meter room. "They looked almost like feral animals. It was horrible," Wilson said.
