2 occupants dead after car plunges into Meuse River following police chase

Two individuals lost their lives when their vehicle entered the Meuse River in Lives-sur-Meuse, a suburb of Namur, Belgium, on Saturday evening. The incident occurred after a police chase that was initiated following a physical altercation in Jambes.

The pursuit commenced around 10:30 p.m. near a convenience store in Jambes. According to initial findings, a suspect drove away when police arrived at the scene. Another person was reportedly struck by the suspect's car and fell to the ground. A special intervention unit from the Namur police zone pursued the vehicle.

Authorities stated the 66-year-old driver drove erratically and ignored police efforts to intercept him. The chase concluded in Lives-sur-Meuse on Chaussée de Liège, where the car collided with a roundabout and subsequently entered the Meuse River.

Emergency divers located the vehicle, and by 11 p.m., the bodies of the driver and his 75-year-old sister were recovered. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene. A medical examiner and a vehicle expert have been appointed to investigate the accident. The Namur prosecutor's office has opened an inquiry to clarify the exact sequence of events, including the details of the police chase.
