2025 was deadliest year for antisemitic attacks in 30 years, study says

Last year marked the deadliest period for antisemitic attacks outside of Israel in more than three decades, with 20 individuals losing their lives in Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, according to a new study.

The J7 Large Communities' Task Force Against Antisemitism issued a stark warning, stating its study "once again sounds the alarm about the deadly reality of antisemitism that Jewish communities worldwide confront at levels unprecedented since World War II." The task force comprises organizations combating antisemitism in countries with the largest Jewish populations outside Israel: Argentina, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, the U.K., and the U.S.

Collectively, these nations host over 90% of the global Jewish diaspora. The group's report detailed more than 23,000 antisemitic incidents across these seven countries. In Australia, 15 people were killed during a Hanukkah celebration at Sydney's Bondi Beach by two gunmen. The U.K. recorded two deaths from an attack on a Manchester synagogue during Yom Kippur, while in the U.S., two Israeli embassy staff were fatally shot at a Jewish museum in Washington D.C., and a grandmother in Boulder, Colorado, died from injuries sustained in a Molotov cocktail attack targeting a gathering in support of hostages in Gaza.

These 20 fatalities made 2025 the deadliest year for antisemitic attacks since 1994, when a bombing at a Jewish community center in Buenos Aires killed 85 people. The report also highlighted a significant surge in overall antisemitic incidents, which increased by 136% across the seven countries since 2022, the year before the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel that initiated the war in Gaza. Violent antisemitic incidents saw a 97% rise during the same timeframe. While incidents decreased in the U.S., Australia, Canada, and France compared to 2024, they remained substantially higher than pre-Oct. 7 levels. The U.K., Argentina, and Germany experienced increases in antisemitic incidents in 2025.
