2026 Commonwealth Federation Fencing Championships Kicks off in Lagos Today

Lagos, Nigeria, is hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Federation Fencing Championships, a prestigious event that marks a historic first for Africa. Rugby School Nigeria in Victoria Island has transformed into the vibrant venue for six days of elite fencing competition, welcoming delegations from 20 nations.

She noted that Nigeria successfully met all hosting criteria, surpassing Australia to secure the rights. Dufour expressed optimism that the championships will significantly enhance fencing's profile across the African continent and encourage increased participation.

This is a dream come true. Since my active fencing years, I have envisioned Nigeria hosting an event of this magnitude.

Adeyinka Samuel, President of the Nigeria Fencing Federation, described the tournament as a long-cherished dream fulfilled. "This is a dream come true," Samuel stated. He highlighted Nigeria's experience in hosting international competitions, including junior world cups and African championships, but emphasized that this event opens even greater opportunities for Nigerian athletes to gain invaluable experience against top Commonwealth competitors.

Our athletes will gain invaluable experience competing against some of the best fencers from across the Commonwealth. My ultimate dream is to see a Nigerian qualify for the Olympic Games after narrowly missing that chance in 2008.

Local Organizing Committee member Olaitan Ogunbiyi predicted a smooth and successful tournament, commending the committee's dedication. Nigerian fencers also shared their excitement and determination. Folayemi Akinyosoye, Nigeria's second-highest ranked male fencer, pledged a strong team performance, while Adebodunrin Thomas, the leading female fencer, expressed her resolve to improve upon her recent World Championships performance and make the nation proud. The championships feature Senior, U-23, Veteran, and Wheelchair categories, with the U-23 and Wheelchair events debuting in Lagos.
