The record was shattered during the United States' Group D match against Turkey on Thursday, when Auston Trusty's early goal marked the 173rd strike of the competition, surpassing the previous benchmark of 172 goals achieved in Qatar in 2022.

Turkey managed to score twice in the first half following Trusty's opener, further increasing the tournament's total goal count to 175. This historic achievement occurred in the 59th match of the 2026 World Cup. In contrast, the previous record of 172 goals was accumulated over all 64 matches played in the 2022 tournament.
