2027 Academic Year Early Admissions Approaching; Balance 'Safe, Appropriate, and Challenging' Applications

South Korean universities are preparing for the 2027 academic year's early admissions, with applications opening between September 7 and 11 for four-year institutions. Junior colleges will have two application periods, from September 7 to 30 and November 11 to 25. This year's early admissions process will select 281,205 students across 194 universities, an increase of 1,296 from the previous year.

The dominant selection method will be based on student records, encompassing 86.1% of all admissions, or 242,252 students. This includes both curriculum-based and comprehensive evaluations. Curriculum-based admissions heavily weigh a student's GPA, with the first semester of the third year being the final point of consideration, making consistent academic performance over five semesters crucial.

Universities are adjusting their admission criteria. Some, like Sookmyung Women's University, are increasing spots for school recommendation-based admissions, while others, like Konkuk University, are reducing them. Changes in application methods, recommendation quotas, and minimum university entrance exam score requirements are also being implemented by institutions such as University of Seoul and Duksung Women's University. Sookmyung Women's University has also eliminated its minimum score requirement for most programs.

Comprehensive evaluations consider not only grades but also detailed subject-specific abilities, extracurricular activities, and personal qualities like academic attitude and problem-solving skills. For students with GPAs below 4.0, careful consideration of their ability to showcase their strengths is advised. Interview formats vary, including document-based and prompt-based assessments, requiring thorough preparation and review of past questions.

Universities are also increasing the weight of essay-based exams (non-sul) in their admissions process. Currently, 21 universities use non-sul exams for 100% of their admissions. Students are encouraged to utilize university resources like past exam papers and guides to prepare. With this being the final year under the 2015 curriculum, a trend towards safer application choices is expected. However, a balanced strategy of applying to programs that are a safe bet, a good fit, and a stretch goal is recommended.
