2027: Kwara APC women seek deputy gov, speaker slots

Female members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State are urging the party leadership to allocate the positions of deputy governor and Speaker of the State House of Assembly to qualified women for the 2027 general elections. This call comes after the conclusion of the party's National Assembly primaries, during which no female candidates secured nominations.

Mopelola Bashir, a former House of Representatives aspirant on the APC platform, presented the appeal in Ilorin. She emphasized that while women were not nominated for national legislative seats, the party still has a significant opportunity to demonstrate its commitment to gender inclusion by supporting female candidates for these crucial state-level roles. Bashir praised Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his consistent efforts in empowering women, transforming Kwara into a model for inclusive governance through the appointment of women to strategic positions.

Bashir argued that such a decision would bolster the APC's progressive identity and preserve Governor AbdulRazaq's legacy of inclusive governance. She stressed that women have been instrumental in the party's electoral successes across Kwara's 16 local government areas, contributing significantly through grassroots mobilization and unwavering support. The APC chieftain maintained that this demand is rooted in the party's tradition of rewarding loyalty, competence, and service, expressing confidence that the leadership would make decisions promoting fairness and unity.
