2027: Opposition risks repeating 2023 mistakes, Lukman warns

Salihu Lukman, a former National Vice-Chairman of Nigeria's All Progressives Congress (APC), has voiced strong concerns that opposition parties are poised to repeat the strategic errors of the 2023 general elections. Lukman, who recently suspended his membership from the party, cited frustration over the persistent failure of opposition leaders to unite under a cohesive platform capable of challenging the ruling APC.

Speaking on Arise News, Lukman argued that unless opposition leaders shift their focus from personal ambitions to building a united front, they risk another electoral defeat in 2027. He acknowledged the recent Court of Appeal ruling allowing the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and other parties to participate in the 2027 elections but stressed that this legal development does not address the fundamental issue of opposition disunity.

Lukman's decision to suspend his ADC membership followed alleged hostility and political marginalization from certain party leaders in Kaduna State, particularly those associated with former Governor Nasir El-Rufai. He expressed apprehension that the opposition might continue with the same approach that proved unsuccessful in 2023, expecting different results. "As it is today, I think no matter what comes out of the judicial process, we can have a party that can contest the election. He emphasized that Nigerians are seeking a credible alternative that offers accountable leadership, especially amidst worsening economic and social conditions. The inability of opposition figures to resolve their internal disputes, Lukman warned, could inadvertently strengthen the APC. "The hope and expectation is that election will produce competition on the basis of which better new leadership can emerge. So far, as a nation, it seems we are not approaching that at all," he concluded.
