22-year-old footballer dies after suffering a stroke and remaining in intensive care

Argentine footballer Lautaro Fagioli, 22, has died after a month and a half in intensive care following an ischemic stroke. Fagioli suffered the stroke shortly after playing a match for the Copa Santa Fe approximately six weeks ago.

The club conveyed that the entire Colón community loves him and will keep him in their memory forever.

Fagioli had been hospitalized since July 4th. He experienced severe discomfort after a game against Central San Carlos, a match his team won to advance to the third round of the Santa Fe tournament. He was subsequently transferred to the Hospital José María Cullen in Santa Fe city.

An ischemic stroke occurs when blood flow to a part of the brain is interrupted, typically by a blood clot, leading to brain cell damage or death. It is the most common type of stroke, accounting for about 87% of cases. Health authorities had confirmed Fagioli was in intensive care, requiring mechanical ventilation and vasoactive drugs, with a guarded prognosis due to the complex and critical nature of his condition requiring constant monitoring.

He and his partner Sol welcomed their daughter, Alfonsina, in December 2024. Fagioli had recently shared a touching post about his daughter, calling her "the day I met the love of my life" and expressing how wonderful it was to experience life with her. He had even taken her to the Colón field recently before a game.
