25 US States Sue Trump Administration Over New Tariffs

Twenty-five U.S. states have filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, challenging the legality of recent tariffs. These states, all led by either Democratic attorneys general or governors, argue that President Trump's administration has overstepped its legal authority with the new trade measures.

Oregon's Attorney General, Dan Rayfield, stated that despite previous legal defeats, Trump continues to create chaos for working families and businesses. The lawsuit was filed at the U.S. Court of International Trade in New York City, following similar actions by smaller U.S. companies seeking to halt the tariffs.

The Trump administration implemented new tariffs of 10% and 12.5% on July 24 against 60 trading partners, including the European Union. The stated justification was that these partners were not doing enough to prevent the export of goods produced through forced labor. These tariffs took effect as a previous global 10% tariff expired.

The White House spokesperson, Kush Desai, defended the tariffs, asserting they are appropriate. He argued that when a foreign country fails to implement and enforce a ban on importing goods made with forced labor, it unfairly burdens American trade and workers. Trump has consistently prioritized tariffs as a key element of his foreign policy, even after significant Supreme Court setbacks.
