300-year sea route revived: Taiwan gifts traditional boat to Philippines' Batanes

A 300-year-old maritime link between Taiwan's Orchid Island and the Philippines' Batanes province has been re-established with the gifting of a large Tao (Yami) plank boat. The vessel, named "Ovayan Golden Friendship," was formally presented to the Batanes provincial government in a ceremony that signifies the renewal of cultural exchange between the Austronesian peoples of Taiwan and the Philippines.

The original plan for a delegation to attend the handover was altered due to flight cancellations, but the boat was successfully delivered. This event marks a significant moment, bridging a 300-year gap in traditional sea travel and cultural connections. The journey undertaken by Tao navigators, using traditional boat-building and navigation skills, highlights the rich maritime heritage of Taiwan's indigenous communities and echoes the historical sea routes used by Austronesian ancestors.
