32 Canadians Missing After Devastating Floods in Nepal and Tibet

Devastating flash floods have left at least 32 Canadian citizens and permanent residents unaccounted for in Nepal and Tibet, according to Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand. In an update provided Friday evening, Anand stated that the whereabouts of these individuals have not yet been confirmed.

Global Affairs Canada (GAC) consular officials are working tirelessly to locate and assist those missing and to support their families back in Canada. Five consular officials have been dispatched to Kathmandu and are collaborating closely with local authorities, partners, airlines, and tour operators to reach Canadians who have lost communication.

Our thoughts are with the people of Nepal and China and everyone affected by the catastrophic flash floods.

Reports indicate that several of the missing individuals were Indo-Canadians participating in a pilgrimage to Mount Kailash and Mansarovar Lake. The minister expressed solidarity with the people of Nepal and China, acknowledging the widespread impact of the catastrophic floods.

Canada has pledged CA$5 million in urgent humanitarian assistance to bolster emergency relief efforts in Nepal. This aid will provide essential life-saving resources, including food, shelter, water, sanitation, and health services to those affected by the natural disaster. The full extent of the tragedy is still unfolding, with nearly 600 deaths already reported across the impacted regions of Tibet and Nepal, and almost 2,500 people still missing.
