452 Glen Lorne residents appeal to Mnangagwa over wetland development

More than 452 residents of Glen Lorne have appealed to President Emmerson Mnangagwa to intervene in a proposed housing development on Lytham Road. They warn that continued construction on environmentally sensitive land could threaten the area’s wetland, waterways and long-term water security.

The residents have formally objected to development on Stand 4717 and want all work halted until the project’s environmental and legal implications receive an independent assessment. Their concerns include the clearing of vegetation, earthworks, boreholes, waterways and reported changes to a dam and watercourse.

At the center of the dispute is the Glen Lorne wetland, which residents regard as part of the local water system. They say concerns about the wetland, boreholes, vegetation and waterways have already been raised, yet work has continued despite objections and appeals to authorities.

In an urgent appeal to the Praesidium, ministers, the City of Harare, the Environmental Management Agency, councillors and fellow citizens, the residents called for an immediate stop to further work. They also requested an independent site inspection and an investigation into the reported alteration of the dam or watercourse and possible environmental damage.

The residents separately wrote to National Housing and Social Amenities Minister Daniel Garwe, questioning whether reports reaching his office accurately reflect conditions on the ground. “You have relied, understandably, on officials and professionals to investigate and report back to you. But having watched what has continued to happen at this site, I respectfully ask you not to rely solely on what you are being told. Please go there yourself,” they wrote.
