70 Arrested in Morocco After Migrant Crisis at Ceuta Border

Moroccan authorities have apprehended at least 70 individuals in connection with the recent migrant crisis at the border of the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. The arrested persons are under investigation for serious offenses, including attempted murder, arson, and vandalism, stemming from clashes with security forces on the Moroccan side of the border, according to the Efe news agency.

This crackdown follows a significant influx where approximately 50,000 people crossed from Morocco into Ceuta over recent days. As of Friday evening, about 48,000 of those individuals had returned to Morocco. Tragically, at least 57 people lost their lives during the incident, with most reportedly drowning while attempting to swim around a border breakwater.

In Madrid, hundreds of demonstrators gathered outside the Moroccan embassy to protest the border enforcement actions. According to AFP, many protesters displayed banners and flags associated with far-right groups in Morocco. The situation highlights the ongoing challenges of irregular migration and border control in the region.
