81 killed in Yemen clashes as Houthis advance toward strategic strait, sources say

At least 81 people have been killed in fighting between Yemen’s Houthis and government forces as the rebels push toward the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, according to military and medical sources cited on Friday.

The clashes began on Thursday when the Houthis launched a ground assault supported by rocket and drone attacks near coastal areas. The fighting is focused on territory bordering the narrow strait at the southern entrance to the Red Sea, a key passage for global shipping.

The Houthi offensive is also aimed at cutting off Mokha, a government-held port city that has come under fire for weeks. From there, the rebels are seeking to advance toward areas near the Bab al-Mandeb and consolidate their position along one of the world’s busiest maritime routes.

The Red Sea has gained added importance as an alternative route for oil exports after Iran nearly halted shipments from the Gulf by blockading the Strait of Hormuz. The Houthis have repeatedly attacked Saudi ships in recent weeks and have disrupted shipping with assaults on passing vessels since the Gaza war began in 2023.
