91-year-old veteran actor Lee Soon-jae insisted on performing despite worsening health

Veteran South Korean actor Lee Soon-jae, 91, demonstrated remarkable dedication to his craft, continuing to perform on stage even as his health declined. Colleagues recently shared anecdotes highlighting his unwavering commitment to his audience and his profession.

During an appearance on the program "Kim Joo-ha's Day & Night," veteran actor Park Geun-hyung and musical actor Kai recounted Lee's final stage performance. Kai recalled that Lee was physically very weak during their last performance of "Waiting for Godot," yet he insisted on appearing on stage. Kai expressed his admiration, recalling how he encouraged Lee, saying, "Teacher, I believe you can do it," hoping to provide strength.

Park Geun-hyung also shared fond memories of filming the show "Grandpas Over Flowers" with Lee, Shin Goo, and Baek Il-sub. He humorously recalled their pact to quit smoking and drinking, which they successfully maintained. Park playfully mentioned that Shin Goo has recently been tempting him with alcohol, eliciting laughter.

Lee Soon-jae remained active in theater leading up to his 90s, performing in stage plays such as "The Long Life Store" and "King Lear." His role in "King Lear" involved a demanding 200-minute performance, and he appeared in all 23 shows. His commitment earned him widespread respect in the theater community. Lee passed away on November 25th at the age of 91.
