95 die, 291 foreign tourists missing in Nepal’s flash floods

Nepal's Himalayan region has been hit by devastating flash floods, killing at least 95 people and leaving 291 foreign tourists missing. The disaster struck the border region with Tibet on Wednesday, leaving hundreds of visitors unaccounted for.

According to the ministry of culture, tourism and civil aviation, 403 visitors, including 341 foreign nationals, were still missing hours after the floods. The Nepal Tourism Board later reported 384 missing travelers, with 291 being non-Nepalis. The nationalities of many missing foreigners remain unconfirmed.

Nepal is a major tourist destination, attracting hikers and climbers from across the globe to its high peaks, including Mount Everest. The missing individuals include 142 Indian nationals, 17 Malaysians, 12 UK citizens, eight South Korean hydropower workers, four South Africans, three US citizens, one Portuguese woman, one Australian, and one Dutch citizen. Two Italian tourists and their guide were reported stranded but receiving assistance.

Surveillance camera footage from the Gyirong Port in Tibet reportedly showed the flash flooding. The full extent of the damage and the number of casualties are still being assessed.
