A book fair that multiplies knowledge and joy

Holguín’s 34th International Book Fair will bring 62 new literary titles to readers across 29 spaces from September 4 to 6. Seventeen of those books come from authors in the province, underscoring the creative strength of the local writing community.

The event will recognize Rubén Rodríguez, whose honors include the Alejo Carpentier Prize. Its opening gala, “Remembrances,” will use a strongly theatrical format under the script and direction of Orestes Saavedra. The program will pay tribute to Russia, the event’s guest nation, through an artistic evocation of its culture.

The fair will also mark the 65th anniversary of the National Union of Cuban Artists and Writers. The organization has arranged “Memorial of the Witness,” a space for presenting books by Emerio Medina and Félix Cabrera. Ediciones Holguín, celebrating its 40th anniversary, will introduce titles including Ronel González’s “The Crimes of the Poetic Craft,” Rafael Inza’s “The Fish on the Hook,” and “Like Fear,” an anthology of Lourdes González’s work prepared by José Luis Serrano.

Children will have their own pavilion, “El Garrancho de Garabulla,” named after one of Rubén Rodríguez’s works. This year, its activities will move into parks and streets in the afternoons, where participants will tell stories connected with literature and interact with passers-by.

Ediciones La Mezquita will run the Social Sciences and Humanities pavilion, featuring the first volume of Fidel Castro’s “Selected Works,” produced with the collaboration of foreign publishers. With Russia as its central theme, the Sciences Pavilion at the Provincial Museum of History will examine documentary sources on the Russian-speaking community in the region. Conciencias Ediciones, from the University of Holguín, will present new works by university professors and discuss ties with higher-education institutions in Russia.
