A boy who survived blood poisoning needs extremely expensive treatment

Myroslav’s skin is so fragile that even minor friction, a touch or clothing can cause it to tear and form painful blisters. The wounds often heal slowly, leaving him vulnerable to serious infections.

Recently, bacteria entered the wounds and caused sepsis, or blood poisoning. The boy needed treatment in an intensive care unit. His mother says the family fears a repeat of the crisis.

Myroslav has received a special medical cream with support from the Children’s Foundation, but the cream is no longer enough. Doctors see potential in Vyjuvek, a new gene-therapy gel that could help his wounds heal faster and reduce the risk of severe infections and other life-threatening complications. It may also ease his daily pain.

The treatment is expensive. A six-month course costs €145,200, a sum the eight-member family cannot pay on its own. The family is asking donors to help fund the gel. His mother said the support could give Myroslav “a pain-free childhood” and thanked everyone helping to prevent another life-threatening infection.
