A light extinguished

Relatives of 10-year-old Shani Coke gathered on the verandah of their family home in Trelawny, Jamaica, to mourn the bright student whose life was tragically cut short. Shani's partially nude body was discovered with her throat slashed on Tuesday, leaving her family devastated and searching for answers.

Shani was born here and lived [with her grandparents], because her [mother] has to work. When Shani goes to school she doesn’t play around. She took her education seriously. From Shani a go basic school she was always first [in her class]. She was always putting out her best. She is from an educated background. Her father is educated and so is her mother.

Her aunt, Shawna Williams-Stevens, tearfully recalled Shani's dedication to her education, stating the child was always at the top of her class since basic school. "She took her education seriously. From Shani a go basic school she was always first," Williams-Stevens said, holding up numerous trophies and certificates Shani had earned at Troy Primary School. Teachers had consistently rewarded her efforts, and her mother always encouraged her with gifts. Shani was recognized for her participation in summer school just last week, receiving a certificate that highlighted her brilliance. "When you look at her you see the next doctor, lawyer, and they just took her life, just cut her off," her aunt lamented.

According to residents and police, Shani was walking home from a shop when she was abducted. A farmer later discovered her body in bushes after hearing strange sounds while searching for his cow. The grisly discovery triggered a violent reaction from the community.

From grade one her teachers rewarded her, whether with a stamp in her book or sweets, or you know the teachers always try to elevate her for her to know that she does good. Her mother would always buy her gifts to encourage her.

Angry residents attacked a father and son, whom they accused of raping and killing the child. The son was beaten, chopped, and stoned to death. His father, also attacked, was admitted to the hospital. The family expressed their grief and trauma, questioning why Shani's promising future was stolen, potentially preventing her from lifting her family out of poverty.

Right now she was [among] the top students at Troy Primary. If school was keeping it would have to lock today, because of Shani. All last week she got her certificate to show her brilliance. When you look at her you see the next doctor, lawyer, and they just took her life, just cut her off. Right now we are devastated. Right now we don’t know our head from our feet. Last night we nuh sleep. This is traumatising. Maybe Kaidra was going to come and take her mother out of poverty and they cut her life short and kill her.
