'A national issue': Police to launch nationwide crackdown on dangerous drivers, road violations

Israel is launching a nationwide crackdown on dangerous driving and road violations in response to a significant rise in accidents and fatalities. Police Commissioner Danny Levi has ordered an immediate, large-scale operation to address what he termed "a national issue."

The initiative will bolster police presence on roads, intensify enforcement, and expand intelligence gathering to apprehend drivers responsible for serious offenses. Levi stressed the need for a "determined fight, especially against those criminal drivers and to eradicate life-endangering offenses."

This move comes as 2025 data reveals a sharp increase in road casualties. A total of 13,261 people were injured, with 459 fatalities. Notably, fatalities on urban roads reached their highest point in two decades, accounting for 37% of all road accident deaths last year.

I want more presence, more enforcement, and a determined fight, especially against those criminal drivers and to eradicate life-endangering offenses.

The operation will also strengthen cooperation between the police, the National Road Safety Authority, and the Transportation Ministry to combat road deaths more effectively. Senior officers have indicated that a significant increase in visible police activity on the roads can be expected soon.
