A stunning prospect: Could Messi and Ronaldo play together?

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo could share a football pitch as teammates if Carlos Tevez succeeds in bringing them to his retirement match.

Reports cited by TNT Sports say Tevez is working with Boca Juniors on the details of the event and wants to invite both stars. The match is planned for December, with possible dates of December 12 or 13, or December 18 or 19, at La Bombonera. The final choice depends on Boca’s schedule and avoiding clashes with the closing rounds of the Argentine professional league.

Tevez wants to gather many of the players who accompanied him during a career that included West Ham, Manchester City, Manchester United, Juventus, Boca Juniors and Argentina. The guest list could reach about 60 players, but Messi and Ronaldo playing together would clearly be the match’s main attraction.

Other possible invitees include Paulo Dybala, Paul Pogba, Yaya Toure, Wayne Rooney, Gianluigi Buffon, Andrea Pirlo, Javier Mascherano, Ángel Di María and Leonardo Bonucci. Tevez retired from professional football in June 2022 after a short spell in China, then returned to Boca Juniors to end his playing career in the shirt that represented much of his football journey. He later moved into coaching, working with Rosario Central, Independiente and Talleres Córdoba.

If Tevez brings Messi and Ronaldo together at La Bombonera, the event would become more than a tribute to the former Argentina forward. It would give fans the chance to see two of their era’s biggest stars wearing the same shirt, even if only once.
