Abandoned 'Kosmos' resort in West Flanders set for new life after 20 years

The 'Kosmos' holiday resort, a once-mythical destination in West Flanders, is set to embrace a new life after two decades of neglect. Located on the Rodeberg in Westouter, the property, which had become a ruin with graffiti-covered walls and broken windows, is now under restoration.

The Rodeberg was something special, that was our place when we were allowed to go out.

New owners Hendrik Daem and Nathalie Lermytte plan to reopen the site in May 2027. As a preview of the ongoing work, the public can step inside the protected main building during Open Monumentendag on Sunday, September 13. This event offers a glimpse into the restoration efforts for the art deco and modernist structure, which was originally built as a youth hotel in 1934.

For years, 'Kosmos' was a vibrant hub, featuring a hotel, cafe, restaurant, and event spaces. It was particularly known for its outdoor swimming pool, a rare amenity in the region. Nicole Nevenjans, who worked at 'Kosmos' from 1991 until its closure in 2005, shared fond memories of the bustling atmosphere and her time baking pancakes. However, the swimming pool closed in 2002 due to access issues for emergency services, and the hotel followed suit in 2005 after the final bankruptcy, leaving locals like Nevenjans heartbroken.

Daem, who purchased the property with his wife five years ago, acknowledged the enduring legacy of the legendary swimming pool. While the pool will be reinstated, it will be relocated on the grounds. The restoration aims to revive the spirit of 'Kosmos,' transforming the derelict site back into a cherished destination.
