Abducted Ogun students regain freedom as police arrest two suspects

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun announced on Thursday the successful rescue of seven students from Gateway ICT Polytechnic in Saapade. The students were abducted by gunmen on July 29. Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the kidnapping, while security forces continue to search for other gang members.

I am pleased to inform the good people of Ogun State that in the early hours of today, Thursday, August 6, 2026, the combined security operation successfully rescued all seven victims alive.

The rescue was the result of a coordinated effort by a joint security team. This team included the Nigeria Police Force, Armed Forces, Department of State Services, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Amotekun Corps, local vigilantes, and hunters. Governor Abiodun highlighted the crucial role of aerial surveillance, which was deployed after he requested intervention from the Inspector-General of Police.

One of the rescued students suffered a gunshot wound during the abduction. This student was promptly evacuated for medical attention and is now in a stable condition. The governor assured the public that the government immediately activated a security response upon learning of the kidnapping. He also noted that the Inspector-General of Police responded swiftly by deploying a police helicopter on August 3, which significantly aided the ground operations.

I am also pleased to note that, as of this moment, two of the kidnappers have been arrested, while our security agencies remain on the trail of the remaining members of the criminal gang.

Governor Abiodun declined to disclose the exact location of the rescue operation, citing ongoing efforts to apprehend the remaining perpetrators. He vowed that kidnappers and their collaborators would find no safe haven in Ogun State. The governor emphasized that the operation is still active and that security agencies are actively pursuing all individuals involved in the criminal enterprise.
