Abia did not buy two Toyota Hilux trucks for N1.3 billion, official says

Abia State has rejected the impression that it spent about 1.3 billion naira on just two Toyota Hilux vehicles, saying the published figure resulted from a missing digit in its 2025 Accountant-General’s Report.

Commissioner for Information Okey Kanu said the Office of the Accountant-General reviewed payment records and procurement documents after the error appeared on page 401 of the consolidated schedule. The review found that the expenditure of approximately ₦1,003,091,350 covered 12 vehicles, not two.

The figure ‘2’ that appeared on page 401 of the consolidated schedule resulted from the omission of the digit ‘1’. It did not reflect the actual number of vehicles purchased.

The verified schedule lists two 2024 Toyota Hilux vehicles supplied by Ubale Services Enterprises for ₦177,750,000. Globe Motors Holdings Ltd supplied five Toyota Hilux double-cab automatic petrol vehicles for ₦412,670,000 and another five four-wheel-drive double-cab vehicles for the same amount. The total listed payment is ₦1,003,091,350, or about ₦83.59 million per vehicle.

The state said the suppliers are identifiable corporate entities and that the vehicles’ numbers, specifications and values can be checked against company records and government documents. It thanked residents and members of the public for scrutinising the published report, and said the error would be formally corrected. Governor Alex Otti’s administration, Kanu said, accepts that official publications can contain mistakes and will issue corrections when necessary.
