Abia gets Nigeria’s first university innovation hub for manufacturing

Nigeria has inaugurated its first Manufacturing Technology University Innovation Pod (Manu-Tech UniPod) at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, in Abia State. This landmark project is a joint effort involving the Federal Government, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, and the Abia State Government.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, represented by Education Minister Olatunji Alausa, stated that the Manu-Tech UniPod reaffirms the government's commitment to leveraging higher education for innovation, entrepreneurship, research commercialization, and job creation. He described the initiative as a "strategic investment in Nigeria's future," emphasizing that universities must evolve beyond traditional roles to become centers for enterprise development, technology transfer, and industrial competitiveness. "This initiative represents far more than the commissioning of another university facility," Shettima said. "It is the unveiling of the broad national vision that positions our universities as agents of industrial transformation, innovation, enterprise creation, and sustainable economic development."

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State highlighted that the UniPod's location in his state reflects the confidence placed in Abia's potential as a regional economic engine. He expressed gratitude for the project, noting that it demonstrates tangible results from the trust invested by the UNDP and the Federal Government. United Nations Assistant Secretary-General Ahunna Eziakonwa added that the Innovation Pod is part of a larger vision to unlock the creative and innovative potential of Africa's youth, where "engineering meets art" and "business meets social enterprise."

The Vice President reiterated the Federal Government's dedication to fostering an educational system that cultivates talent, drives innovation, and accelerates industrialization, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's objective of achieving a $1 trillion Nigerian economy by 2030. The Manu-Tech UniPod is intended to be a catalyst for this transformation, bridging the gap between academic learning and practical industrial application.
