Abia ranks among Nigeria’s top states for revenue and capital growth, report says

Abia State says it has moved into the ranks of Nigeria’s strongest performers in revenue growth, capital spending and service delivery, pointing to what officials described as rapid fiscal and infrastructural progress between 2017 and 2026.

Commissioner for Information Okey Kanu presented the figures after a State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti. Citing the 2026 Budget Report and the Phillips Consulting State Performance Index, he said Abia ranked second in aggregate revenue growth and third in internally generated revenue growth nationwide. The state also ranked first in total expenditure growth, capital expenditure growth and personnel expenditure growth, while maintaining comparatively low overhead costs.

“Both reports point in the same direction. Abia State is improving rapidly,” Kanu said. He described Abia as the country’s third-fastest-improving state, with a score of 0.67 basis points, behind Enugu at 1.15 and Jigawa at 0.77. He attributed the results to what he called careful resource management, stronger revenue mobilisation, expanded capital investment and restraint in administrative spending.

Kanu said the government’s priority remained serving Abia residents. He also announced a September campaign to distribute 3,030,000 treated insecticide-treated nets across the state’s 17 local government areas. The nets, valued at more than ₦1 billion, would mark Abia’s first mass distribution campaign since 2010 and form part of efforts to reduce malaria and related deaths.

The commissioner said the Community-Based Health Insurance Programme had enrolled 270,739 people. He announced the formal launch of the Ameke Community Scheme for September 16, 2026, with 1,000 people to be enrolled at ₦18,000 each. He added that recruitment remained open for consultants, medical officers and dental officers, and said no cases of Ebola, Lassa fever, COVID-19, diphtheria, cholera, Mpox or yellow fever had been reported during the period under review.
