Abia’s approach to sports development strategic, Commissioner

The Abia State Government has outlined a deliberate and strategic three-year plan for sports development, emphasizing grassroots talent discovery and athlete nurturing. Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Sir Obilor Ananaba, shared these plans during a stakeholders' meeting in Umuahia.

We recognise that sustainable sports development is not achieved overnight. It is accomplished by taking one step at a time, building sporting initiatives, implementing innovative ideas, and creating opportunities for the gradual transformation of our sporting landscape.

Ananaba stressed that sustainable sports development is a gradual process, requiring consistent investment and innovative ideas. He stated that the administration, under Governor Alex Otti, has focused on building a solid foundation for sports at the grassroots level. This approach aims to create pathways for young individuals to excel in various sporting disciplines and contribute positively to society.

The meeting served as a platform to review progress, address challenges, and set future priorities. The ministry has actively introduced a wide range of sporting activities to young people across the state, ensuring opportunities for talent identification and development. Sports like boxing, athletics, badminton, volleyball, table tennis, and wrestling are being promoted.

With the continued support and funding provided by the Abia State Government under the leadership of Governor Alex Otti, we have sustained sports development at the grassroots level and created pathways for young people to excel in sports and contribute positively to society.

The government's objective is to foster an enabling environment for talent development. Governor Otti's commitment has facilitated the sponsorship of sporting events, supported athletes' participation in competitions, and strengthened grassroots programs. These initiatives are designed to build a strong base for future champions while promoting healthy lifestyles and teamwork among Abia's youth.
