Abia State Begins Reconstruction of 100-Bed Okpuala Ngwa Hospital

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has initiated the reconstruction of the Okpuala Ngwa General Hospital, a historically significant facility in the Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area. The groundbreaking ceremony on Monday marked the beginning of efforts to restore quality healthcare services to the region.

Otti emphasized the hospital's historical importance, noting that it was once a major medical center for the old Eastern Ngwa area and Abia State. He expressed disappointment that past administrations failed to maintain such vital public facilities, contrasting it with the efforts of Abia's founding fathers who, despite limited resources, upheld these institutions. "If our forefathers, with limited resources, were able to maintain hospitals like this, it is a shame that we all failed in our time with all the technology, education and money," the governor stated.

This reconstruction is a key component of his administration's strategy to rebuild and enhance the healthcare sector statewide. Governor Otti revealed that general hospitals in Arochukwu and Obingwa Local Government Areas have already been completed and are awaiting inauguration. The Okpuala Ngwa facility was prioritized due to its strategic location and is slated for completion within a "record time."

Furthermore, the governor announced the recovery of portions of the hospital land that were allegedly acquired illegally. He issued a stern warning against the illegal occupation of government property, asserting the state's ownership and readiness to defend it legally. The Commissioner for Health, Enoch Uche, confirmed that the upgraded facility will be a 100-bed hospital equipped with modern amenities, including maternity wards, surgical theaters, and a general outpatient department, aligning with the governor's vision to ensure every LGA has a functional general hospital.
