Abia unveils activities for 35th anniversary

Abia State is gearing up to commemorate its 35th anniversary with a comprehensive week-long program of activities, as announced by Commissioner for Information Okey Kanu. The celebrations, set to begin on Sunday, August 23, will feature the commissioning and flagging off of various projects across the state.

The anniversary events will kick off with an interdenominational thanksgiving service at the Trade More Event Centre in Umuahia. The following days will include a dedicated Youth Innovation Day on Wednesday, August 26, featuring a hackathon and technology exhibition. Governor Alex Otti is scheduled to commission completed projects and initiate new ones on Tuesday, August 25.

Finally, on Thursday, the 27th of August, the very day the state was created, the Governor will make a state broadcast in the morning. Later that morning, there will be an anniversary keynote lecture.

The climax of the celebration will be on Thursday, August 27, the actual anniversary date. The day will commence with a state broadcast by Governor Otti, followed by an anniversary keynote lecture. This lecture aims to provide a platform for examining Abia's developmental journey since its creation in 1991 by the military administration of General Ibrahim Babangida.

In addition to the anniversary events, the State Executive Council meeting, chaired by Governor Otti, also saw the government acknowledging the 85th birthday of former military administrator General Ibrahim Babangida. Furthermore, the government is extending support to Abia returnees from South Africa, with Governor Otti directing an investigation into stranded citizens and approving N1 million each for 31 verified returnees as interim resettlement assistance.
