Abia youths transformed: From tricycles to tech and leadership

Abia State in Nigeria is moving beyond the era of distributing tricycles and offering meager political appointments as "youth empowerment." Governor Alex Otti's administration has initiated a decisive shift towards developing human capital, viewing young people as the driving force for the state's future.

At the core of this transformation is the Abia State Leadership Academy (ASLA). This program, designed for 1,000 youths per cohort, partners with the Enterprise Development Centre of Pan-Atlantic University. It combines rigorous screening with intensive training, mentorship, and project development, focusing on governance, public policy, AI, technology, entrepreneurship, value creation, and civic responsibility. The academy emphasizes building thinkers and creators, not dependents, fostering confidence and competence.

ASLA graduates are actively launching businesses, developing tech solutions, and initiating community projects, thereby creating jobs rather than waiting for government positions. This approach cultivates a leadership pipeline, grooming future commissioners, CEOs, and community leaders, and directly addressing the leadership gap that previous handout-based programs could never bridge. The skills, networks, and mindset acquired through ASLA offer lasting value that cannot be easily lost.

Governor Otti's administration is further tackling youth unemployment through other initiatives. Abia TechRise is a flagship program focused on software development, product design, data analysis, and digital skills, providing participants with laptops to facilitate continuous learning. This program aims to produce employable talent for Nigeria's digital economy. Additionally, the Abia Soccer Fest leverages sports to identify and train young football talent, instilling discipline, teamwork, and career awareness in sports management, while keeping youth engaged productively and opening international opportunities.
