Acclaimed Singer Carly Simon Reveals Battle with Parkinson's Disease and Skin Cancer

Legendary singer Carly Simon has disclosed her battle with Parkinson's disease, a diagnosis that has significantly impacted her life. The 83-year-old artist, famous for her hit "You're So Vain," also confirmed she had surgery for basal cell carcinoma, a form of skin cancer. Simon explained that she needed time to accept her diagnosis and decide how much to share, highlighting the unpredictable nature of Parkinson's. "Some days I'm so tired I can't move at all. Others give me a little more room to move, to think, to work and to feel like myself," she stated. Her health issues began with arthritis, leading to knee and hip replacements. Initially attributing her mobility problems to recovery, her condition worsened. She described how soft furniture became an adversary, saying, "Once I sat down, I felt like the armchair swallowed me and I would stay there forever." After extensive tests at the Mayo Clinic, she received the Parkinson's diagnosis. Simon also spoke openly about the emotional challenges, including anxiety and a specific apathy she likens to a starfish drying on the sun. Adding to her health concerns, she faced basal cell carcinoma on her face, which further shook her confidence and prompted a period of "hibernation." Despite these difficulties, the musician has continued her creative work. Amidst her health struggles, she began recording a new album, "Comes in Waves." Simon views music as a savior that appears quietly "like a cat or a dog" when you feel not quite yourself. The album features songs and fragments she had saved for an unknown future, which Simon concludes is now.
