Actor Mark Chao laments 'winter' in film industry, receives few scripts

Taiwanese-Canadian actor Mark Chao (Zhao Ting) has voiced deep concern over the current state of the film and television industry, describing it as experiencing a severe "winter." The acclaimed actor, known for his roles in "Black & White" and "Eternal Love," revealed in a recent interview with "People" magazine that he has received only about 10 script offers in the first half of 2026, a drastic decrease from previous years.

The film and television industry is so cold that even at home in the summer, we don't need to turn on the air conditioning.

Chao likened the current industry climate to a summer where air conditioning isn't needed due to the pervasive cold. He noted a significant shift from being able to "pick projects" to now "waiting for projects." This change reflects a broader market contraction, as many industry peers who were once constantly busy are now idle.

Reflecting on the film sector specifically, Chao made a stark statement: "Movies are gone." He clarified this doesn't mean the end of filmmaking itself, but rather a lament for the decline of the traditional film market. He cited changes in audience viewing habits and increased discernment as factors contributing to this shift. Chao fears that cinema might become a "niche luxury item" in the future, admitting he now only visits movie theaters five or six times a year.

Chao, who married Chinese actress Gao Yuanyuan in 2014 and has focused his career primarily in mainland China, also shared his views on his daughter's future. He firmly stated he would prefer she pursue a different, more ordinary and stable career, especially given the current industry climate. However, he added that he would respect her choice if she developed a strong passion for acting.
