Actor Zaher Alvi sent to jail over wife's death

Actor Niamot Ullah Bhuiyan, widely recognized as Zaher Alvi, has been jailed after a Dhaka court denied his bail request in a case related to his wife's death. The court's decision came as Alvi surrendered to the authorities.

His wife, Afra Ivnath Khan Ikra, a social media influencer, was found hanging in their Mirpur DOHS apartment on February 28. She was pronounced dead at Kurmitola General Hospital. Ikra's father filed a case on March 1 against Alvi and his mother, Nasrin Sultana Shyuli, accusing them of abetting suicide. The case statement alleges that family disputes and continuous abuse drove Ikra to take her own life.

While Alvi was overseas when his wife passed away, his mother, Nasrin Sultana, had previously surrendered to the court and obtained bail. Alvi's legal team had sought protection from arrest upon his return to Bangladesh, and the High Court ruled in his favor, allowing him to come back to the country on June 5.
