Actress Ogala's cyberstalking arraignment stalled over surgery claim

The planned arraignment of Nollywood actress Doris Ogala before the Federal High Court in Lagos hit a snag on Thursday, with the proceedings stalled due to the defendant's absence. Ogala faces a four-count charge for allegedly cyberstalking Pastor Chris Okafor, including publishing personal materials without consent, disseminating false information, cyberbullying, and attempted extortion.

Her legal team cited health reasons for her inability to appear, stating she had undergone surgery two days prior and was recuperating in Abia State, with an affidavit filed to support this claim. However, the prosecution raised concerns about the lack of prior notification and the authenticity of the medical report, which was not from a government hospital.

My Lord, the defendant is indisposed, having undergone a surgical procedure on April 21, 2026. She is currently in Abia State recuperating. An affidavit to that effect has been filed before this Honourable Court.

Despite the procedural issues raised by the prosecution, Justice Akintayo Aluko opted not to issue a bench warrant, granting the defendant the benefit of the doubt. The court directed that any future medical reports must be from a government hospital and emphasized the defense's accountability for ensuring the defendant's appearance at the next hearing. This case highlights the complexities of legal proceedings when health issues arise, particularly concerning the verification of medical claims.
