Adeleke Heads to Court as EFCC Freezes Osun Salary Account

Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has vowed to challenge the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission's (EFCC) decision to freeze the state's salary account. Adeleke denounced the action as unconstitutional and a violation of due process. The EFCC, however, maintained its stance, asserting that the freeze was necessary to prevent the alleged diversion of public funds.

A source familiar with the investigation revealed that over N18 billion was withdrawn from the account in less than two months, prompting scrutiny. The source, who requested anonymity, dismissed claims that the EFCC was acting selectively ahead of the Osun election. Instead, the source alleged that investigators observed unusual transaction patterns, with accounts typically used for monthly salary payments showing multiple large transfers in a short period.

The freezing of the account drew sharp criticism from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which labeled the move "political terrorism" and part of a "win-at-all-cost agenda" by the ruling party that threatens Nigerian democracy. Legal and civil rights groups also faulted the EFCC's action. Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police Force announced the deployment of 15,000 personnel across Osun State ahead of the governorship election, warning against electoral law violations.
