AfD Leads Saxony-Anhalt Polls; Greens Eye Parliamentary Entry

The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party maintains a significant lead in the latest opinion polls for the upcoming state election in Saxony-Anhalt, according to the 'Sachsen-AnhaltTREND' survey conducted by Infratest dimap. The AfD stands unchanged at 41 percent, solidifying its position as the leading political force in the state.

The poll clearly shows that no one here has a majority, that in the end it is a head-to-head race.

The Christian Democratic Union (CDU), currently leading the state government in coalition with the SPD and FDP, sees its support drop by two percentage points to 24 percent. The Left party garners 13 percent, while the Social Democrats (SPD) are at 7 percent. Notably, the Greens have reached the 5 percent threshold required to enter the state parliament, a development that could complicate the formation of a government solely led by the AfD.

Minister-President Sven Schulze of the CDU acknowledged the challenging electoral landscape, describing the situation as a close race. He expressed that the federal government's recent actions have made campaigning "incredibly difficult" and hopes that shifting focus away from national issues will help garner more support. The Greens and The Left have expressed satisfaction with their respective poll numbers. Green party leader Felix Banaszak emphasized that a broader coalition of parties ruling out cooperation with the AfD would make it less likely for the AfD to gain control of key state institutions like the police and justice system.

The survey, which polled 1,149 eligible voters via phone and online between July 23-28, indicates a high level of voter dissatisfaction. The AfD is classified as far-right in Saxony-Anhalt, and its strong showing raises concerns about the potential political direction of the state. The Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) party failed to reach the 5 percent hurdle, polling at 4 percent.
