AfD remains ahead in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern as SPD narrows gap, poll finds

The SPD has moved to within three percentage points of the AfD in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, around two and a half weeks before the state election. An Infratest dimap poll commissioned by public broadcaster NDR gives the AfD 35% and the SPD 32%.

The SPD, led by state premier Manuela Schwesig, gained three points compared with the broadcaster’s July poll. The AfD fell by one point. The Left Party remains in third place at 11%, down one point, while the CDU stands at 8%, also down one point. The Greens remain at 5%, a level that could allow them to return to the state parliament. The BSW is unchanged at 4% and would remain outside parliament, as would the FDP and other parties.

The figures would not support a continuation of the governing SPD-Left coalition on its own. Adding the Greens would make another term for the current governing parties mathematically possible. The AfD would not have enough support to govern alone.

The election is scheduled for Sept. 20. In 2021, the SPD won 39.6% and became the strongest party, while the AfD received 16.7%, the CDU 13.3%, the Left Party 9.9%, the Greens 6.3% and the FDP 5.8%. The poll surveyed 1,215 eligible voters between Aug. 26 and 31 through computer-assisted telephone and online interviews. A separate Forsa poll published the previous day showed a wider gap, with the AfD at 37% and the SPD at 28%.
