AfD seeks support from other politicians after election victory

The Alternative for Germany is preparing to test whether individual lawmakers will help it form a government in Saxony-Anhalt after winning 43.8% of the vote in Sunday's state election.

Ulrich Siegmund, the AfD's lead candidate in the state, said the party would hold talks with individual parliamentary groups and members. "We will of course hold talks to see whether there are, and this is a crucial message today, individual parliamentary groups or individual members of parliament who are willing to join us to tackle this historic task," he said, according to Reuters.

The result is expected to give the AfD 39 of the 83 seats in the state parliament. The party therefore needs support from at least three additional lawmakers to secure a majority.

The AfD occupies the far right of Germany's political spectrum. It criticizes immigration and the European Union, advocates traditional German values and supports closer relations with Russia.
