AfD victory could further shake Germany’s government, expert says

The Alternative for Germany's strong showing in Saxony-Anhalt could create another shock for Chancellor Friedrich Merz's government, political scientist Jakub Eberle says.

Eberle points to two main factors behind the result, based on early estimates: broad dissatisfaction with the federal government and an unremarkable campaign by the governing Christian Democratic Union.

The AfD's performance gives the party an unusually high share of the vote in the state election. Eberle said the outcome could further shake the federal government.
